Cookie Policy

What are “cookies”?

“Cookies” are small data files used as unique identifiers. Each cookie file is unique for your web browser. The cookie file contains anonymous information and is sent from the server of the website you are browsing to your computer or mobile telephone. It will be stored on your device and only this server will be able to find or read the contents of this cookie file. Once received, cookie files may be sent back to the website servers with data that is updated as you browse the website.

Cookie files can be set by the website you are visiting (“our cookies”), or may be set by an organisation which is not the owner of the website you are browsing (“third-party cookies”). For instance, they may be set by another website which runs content on the page you are browsing, or by an independent analytics company. The websites you visit may also include content inserted from other websites and those sites may also set their own cookies. Websites can use third-party advertising networks to provide targeted advertisements. These cookies may be capable of tracking your browsing of various sites.

These websites use two types of cookies:

  • Session cookies – Session cookies are stored only temporarily during a browsing session and are deleted from your device when the browser is closed.
  • Permanent cookies – This type of cookies is stored on your computer for a fixed amount of time (usually a month, year or longer) and these cookies are not deleted when you close your browser. Permanent cookies are used to identify you from one browsing session to the next, such as to store your preferences, so they will remember them the next time you visit.

How do we use cookies?

We use cookie files to improve your user experience by enabling the website to identify you, either for the duration of your visit (using session cookies), or for repeated visits (using permanent cookies). The cookie files we use can:

  • be essential in facilitating your movement around the site or for providing certain basic functions, or
  • improve the functionality of our website, e.g. by saving your preferences. They log your choices (e.g. your user name or chosen language) and enable us to provide a personalised environment; or
  • they help us to improve the performance of our website, to enable us to offer you a better user experience. The information provided by these cookie files is anonymous and helps us to understand how our visitors use our website, to enable us to improve the presentation of its content. These services are generally provided by independent measurement and research companies, so these cookies may be third-party cookies.

If we did not use cookies, our website would see you as a new visitor every time you visit a new page of our website – for instance, if you enter your login details and then move on to another page, the site would not recognise you and you would not be able to remain logged in.

We need to use cookie files to keep our website effective and to provide you with a user-friendly environment. Cookies therefore cannot be blocked separately and by continuing to browse our website and use our online services you consent to allow us to store these cookie files on your device.

Our website also uses cookies for behaviourally targeted advertising, which enables us to modify an advertisement and ensure that it is relevant for you based on the areas you browse on our website and the geographic location of your IP address. These cookies are placed by third-party advertising and commercial networks with our consent.

What to do if you do not want to set cookie files

Consent to the placement of cookie files is granted on a voluntary basis. If you wish, you can block some or all cookie files or delete cookies that have already been set. All the details about managing cookies and the option to block them in various types of web browser can be found at www.aboutcookies.org, or

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/block-enable-or-allow-cookies (for Internet Explorer), or

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-and-disable-cookies-website-preferences (for Mozilla/Firefox),

https://support.google.com/chromeos/answer/95647?hl=en (for Chrome),

http://www.opera.com/help/tutorials/security/privacy/ (for Opera).

However, you must bear in mind that if you delete or block cookies sent from our website which are essential or which ensure functionality and performance, you might not be able to use the site.

You can display the types of cookies used on our website and thus find out how to change your cookie settings or to block the cookies used on our website.

Third-party websites

If you use one of our partners’ websites, the cookie file may be set by the websites you visit. We do not operate these sites, and so have no control over the spread of these cookies. More information about these cookies can be found on the relevant third-party website.
